History
There are two castle ruins just outside Peterhead:
Inverugie Castle (Grid Ref NK102483) is in a
rather dangerous condition, and being in the village of
Inverugie itself, it has been fenced off from the public.
It is accessible by escort only with prior arrangement
with the owners who live in the adjacent properties.
Ravenscraig Castle (Grid Ref NK095488) is in an
equally dangerous condition, perhaps more so given that
it is much taller and on high ground making it a rather
more imposing, towering ruin. However, as it is on a riverbank
away from the well-trodden public path, it hasn't been
fenced off so access isn't a problem, but do be careful!
Old Slains Castle (Grid Ref NK055300) is further
away but well worth a visit. It is in a stunning isolated
location on a rocky headland, yet now has a handful of
more modern homes to keep it company. On the lane between
Whinnyfold and Collieston is a sign to Mains of Slains
farm. Follow the farm track straight through the farmyard
and turn left after the farm buildings. This rougher track
takes you all the way to the old castle ruin and the nearby
homes where you can turn and park the car.
